Construction worker cutting asphalt road surface with petrol power road saw and diamond blade during roadworks

Clean Cuts and Precise Removal from Veteran Crews

Our operators have been cutting and removing asphalt across the Reno, NV area for years, and it is the kind of work where experience shows up immediately in the finished product. A crew that knows what it is doing leaves straight, vertical edges and a clean excavation. A crew that does not leaves ragged perimeters that guarantee the repair fails at the seam.

Asphalt Protectors has been doing this since 1989. The Podnar family took over in 2004 and kept building crew depth, because on precision work like this the operator matters more than the machine.

Every removal we perform gets checked against the quality control standards we developed with engineering firms before new material goes back in.

What Saw Cutting and Removal Is

Saw cutting uses a diamond blade to slice a clean vertical line through asphalt or concrete, defining exactly where a repair area begins and ends. Removal is the excavation of everything inside that line, down to whatever depth the repair requires.

The reason it matters comes down to how asphalt bonds. New material placed against a broken, tapered edge has almost nothing to grip, so water gets into the joint and the patch begins failing from the perimeter inward.

A vertical saw-cut face gives the new asphalt a full-depth surface to bond against. It is the difference between a repair that lasts years and one that lasts a season.

Types of Cutting and Removal Work

  • Full-Depth Removal — Asphalt cut and excavated to base level for structural repairs
  • Partial-Depth Removal — Surface layers removed while sound lower material remains in place
  • Utility Trench Cutting — Clean cuts for utility installation, repair, or service line access
  • Concrete Cutting and Removal — Sidewalks, curbs, gutters, and pads cut and removed for replacement
  • Perimeter Cutting for Patches — Squared repair areas prepared ahead of patching work
  • Tie-In Cuts — Transitions where new pavement meets existing surface at entrances and property boundaries

Our Saw Cut and Removal Process

  • Layout and Marking – We define repair boundaries in squared, regular shapes rather than following the ragged outline of the damage
  • Utility Location – Underground utilities are identified before cutting, because a saw blade does not care what it hits
  • Saw Cutting – Diamond blades produce straight, vertical faces at the depth the repair requires
  • Excavation – Material inside the cut is broken out and removed without disturbing pavement outside the line
  • Subgrade Inspection – With the section open, we assess what is underneath, which is often where the real problem turns out to be
  • Haul-Off and Site Cleanup – Debris and slurry are removed so the area is clean and ready for new material

Benefits of Proper Cutting and Removal in Northern Nevada

  • Repairs That Actually Bond — Vertical edges give new asphalt real surface area to adhere to
  • Water Stays Out of the Joint — Tight seams matter enormously here, where freeze and thaw cycles exploit every opening
  • Surrounding Pavement Stays Intact — Cutting confines the disturbance instead of spider-webbing damage outward
  • Hidden Problems Get Found — Opening the section reveals base and drainage issues before they get paved over again
  • Cleaner Finished Appearance — Squared repairs look intentional rather than like scars across the lot
  • Smaller Repair Footprint — Precision cutting means removing only what genuinely needs to come out

Saw Cut and Removal FAQs

Why not just dig out the broken asphalt without cutting?

Because the resulting edge is crumbling and tapered. New asphalt cannot bond properly to it, water enters the seam, and the repair starts failing at the perimeter almost immediately.

How much larger than the damage should the cut area be?

Enough to reach sound pavement on every side and to square up the shape. Damage rarely stops exactly where it looks like it does, so cutting to the visible edge leaves compromised material in place.

Does saw cutting create a mess on the property?

Wet cutting produces slurry, which we contain and clean up as part of the work. The area is swept and clear before we bring new material in.

Can you cut through concrete as well as asphalt?

Yes. Sidewalks, curb and gutter, dumpster pads, and entrance aprons all get cut and removed for replacement as part of our concrete work.

What if you find something unexpected under the pavement?

We stop and tell you. Soft subgrade, saturated base, or an unmarked utility changes the scope, and you get the information and a revised recommendation rather than a surprise on the invoice.
